Highlander Cat Health, Ethics & Biosecurity

At Enchanted Highlanders, health and ethics are the foundation of everything we do. We are a small, closed cattery and a preservation-focused Highlander breeder, dedicated to protecting and improving a rare breed through responsible breeding, transparency, and lifelong support for our kittens and families.

Health Practices

Intentional, Managed Preservation Breeding

Intentional, Managed Preservation Breeding

Our kittens receive attentive, hands-on care from birth through placement. We focus on raising kittens with strong immune systems, sound structure, and stable, confident temperaments to support a smooth transition into their new homes.

Our kittens are:

  • Raised in-home with daily handling and intentional socialization
  • Seen by a licensed veterinarian
  • Provided age-appropriate preventive care prior to placement
  • Carefully evaluated for health, growth, and development before being approved to go home

We maintain detailed records for each kitten and are transparent with families regarding health history, veterinary care, and ongoing support.

Intentional, Managed Preservation Breeding

As a preservation breeder of a rare breed, we may have multiple litters within a year. This does not reflect volume breeding. It reflects intentional, managed breeding necessary to support genetic diversity within the Highlander breed.

Each pairing is carefully planned and evaluated based on the health of our queens, genetic diversity, temperament, and long-term breed goals. Litters are responsibly staggered to allow appropriate recovery time, individualized care, and hands-on socialization for every kitten.

Preservation breeding requires thoughtful planning and experience. Ethical breeding is defined by standards, accountability, and daily care; not by assumptions based solely on numbers.

Ethical Breeding Standards

Intentional, Managed Preservation Breeding

Closed Cattery & Biosecurity

We are a preservation-focused breeder, not a trend-driven operation. This means:

  • Limited, thoughtfully planned pairings
  • No exaggerated traits or unrealistic size claims
  • No year-round or back-to-back breeding without proper recovery
  • No impulse placements

The Highlander is a moderate, athletic breed, and we are committed to protecting its future through responsible, informed breeding practices.

Closed Cattery & Biosecurity

To protect the health and safety of our cats and kittens, Enchanted Highlanders operates as a closed cattery. This means we do not allow in-person visits to our home or cattery. While we understand the desire to “see where kittens are raised,” limiting physical access is one of the most effective ways to prevent the introduction of illness, parasites, and viruses that can be unknowingly carried on clothing, shoes, hands, and personal items.

Our cattery is located within our private home, and maintaining biosecurity is essential not only for the wellbeing of our animals, but also for the safety and privacy of our family. As a preservation breeder of a rare breed, we take these responsibilities seriously and follow protocols that prioritize long-term health over convenience.

Transparency is still very important to us. Families receive regular updates, photos, and videos of kittens as they grow, and we actively share ongoing content on our Facebook page so families can follow along and see daily life, development, and care within our program. This allows families to stay connected and informed without compromising health or security.

Visits are limited by design, not by secrecy. Placement decisions are made based on careful screening, education, and open communication, ensuring that each kitten is placed thoughtfully while maintaining the highest standards of animal welfare, biosecurity, and personal privacy.

Placement & Lifetime Support

Placement & Lifetime Support

All kittens are placed with approved families only. An application is required to ensure the best possible match for each kitten and household.

Our responsibility does not end at pickup. We provide lifelong breeder support and remain available for guidance, questions, and continued connection long after a kitten goes home.

Our Commitment

Closed Cattery & Biosecurity

Placement & Lifetime Support

Ethical breeding is not about producing the most kittens. It is about producing healthy, well-adjusted companions and standing behind them for life. Families who choose Enchanted Highlanders value transparency, education, and responsible practices, and we are proud to support them every step of the way.
